Avoiding Road Debris Could Be Simple With Preventative Vehicle Check

Many of the more than 25,000 vehicle accidents caused by debris on the highway could be avoided by simple maintenance, according to the Car Care Council.

“Although avoiding some of the things that might fall off a truck is impossible, there are things a driver can do to be proactive in trying to prevent a potential accident,” said Rich White, Executive Director of the Car Care Council. “Just by conducting a simple pre-trip check to make sure such things as your wipers are not worn out, your tires are inflated properly and the brakes are working could save you from a serious situation.”

In a recent research study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, it was discovered that debris that has been unintentionally discharged from vehicles onto the roadway is estimated to cause over 25,000 crashes per year in North America resulting in approximately 80-90 fatalities.

The Car Care Council recommends before every extended driving trip that a person have their car checked thoroughly by a certified service technician. Not only can a pre-trip inspection help reduce chances of costly and possibly dangerous road trouble, it also provides an opportunity to have repairs made at home, with one’s own technician who knows the vehicle.
